CIWM offers two entry routes to becoming a Fellow:

Applicants are peer-assessed to ensure they meet the Fellow criteria and commitment required to support CIWM and the sector. The first three criteria must be demonstrated by the applicant in their application, and the fourth will be evidenced by their chosen sponsor.
Leadership and Direction
- Leadership accomplishments and responsibility (could be related to staff, team, division,project, academic research, etc.)
- Be able to steer strategic direction regionally, nationally, or internationally.
- Significant or impactful project, work, or initiative.
- Commitment to equality, diversity, and inclusion.
Ability to develop and implement practical solutions.
- Applying knowledge to influence practice.
- Impactful contribution for the benefit of the wider sector.
Passion and Commitment
- Be determined, passionate, driven, and ready to foster the profession for the general good.
- Using achievements to inspire others and raise the public profile of the profession.

Only applicable to those applying via the Direct Entry route.
Chartered membership is assessed against the following seven competencies. As those applying for via the direct entry route have not previously been assessed, they are required to complete a personal statement demonstrating how their knowledge, expertise, and experience meet these requirements. Examples can be found in our Fellow Application Guidance.
Knowledge and understanding of the resources and wastes management industry.
A1 Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of current and impending legislation relating to the wastes and resource management industry in the country where you work.
- Critically apply understanding of the implications of current and impending legislation relevant to the area of specialism you currently work within.
- Demonstrate an understanding of current and impending legislation relevant to the wider wastes and resource management industry and how this may impact your sector and others.
A2 Show an understanding of any relevant government strategies that affect the waste and resource sector.
- Discuss the relevant current Government Strategies.
- Explain how the relevant strategies may influence policy, legislation now or in the future.
- Identify how the strategies may impact on your own sector.
A3 Understand current topical issues relating to wastes and resource.
- Discuss topical issues relating to wastes and resources.

A4 Understand the structure of the wastes and resource industry in terms of key organisations, their roles and how they interact with each other.

There are three steps to the assessment process for Fellowship.
How applications are processed
Once submitted, your application will be reviewed to ensure you meet both the entry criteria and have provided sufficient information on the 3 key areas. At this stage, you may be asked to provide additional information in support of your application.
If your application is approved, you’ll be invited to attend an online professional discussion which will last approximately 40-50 mins.
We aim to notify applicants of the outcome of the discussion within five working days.
Your Professional Interview
If your application is successful, you’ll be invited to attend a professional interview.
Chartered Member upgrade route
For Chartered Member's applying to upgrade to Fellow, the professional discussion will last approx. 50 minutes.
Direct entry route
For those applying via the direct entry route, the professional discussion will last approx. 1 hour and 50 mins as you will also be
required to demonstrate how you meet the grade of Chartered member (*excluding Chartered members of less than 7 years), please refer to the Chartered guidance document for full details. This will then be followed by a Fellow professional discussion.
Interview Outcomes
Following your interview, you'll be informed of the panels decision - either success or referred.
Success: You have successfully achieved Chartered status. You’ll receive a certificate confirming your achievement, together with a welcome pack to help you make the most of your Chartered membership.
Referred: If your application is unsuccessful, we’ll provide feedback to help you identify the areas requiring further development. We’re committed to supporting you in strengthening these areas and progressing towards Chartered status.

Up-to-date CV
You should provide a current CV which clearly details each of your roles, responsibilities, and shows your interaction with resources and waste management. Any role that you deem to be less relevant to your application should still be briefly included to ensure there are no gaps in your CV.
Personal Statement - Professional attainment (Fellow Competencies)
Your personal statement should identify your outstanding achievements throughout your career that are relevant to resources and waste management, and beyond.
You may have dedicated your career to the resources and waste sector, or you may have made a significant impact in the sector through visionary leadership.
Becoming a CIWM Fellow acknowledges the impact you have made, beyond the depth of your technical knowledge and demonstrates that you are an innovator and influencer.
Personal Statement - How you have supported, or intend to support, the work of CIWM
This is an additional personal statement which should identify how you currently or intend to support the work of CIWM and its members. Fellows are senior members of CIWM who commit to ‘give back’
to the sector and examples of this could be:
- Influencing policy.
- Supporting CIWM events (e.g. speaking opportunities to inform members and the sector).
- Involvement with CIWM regional Centres.
- Writing for the Circular Magazine and the CIWM Knowledge Centre.
- Providing input to legislative and policy consultations.
- Supporting individual members through mentoring.
- Chartered interview panellist.
Continuing Professional Development (CPD)
Your application should include a CPD log which shows a minimum of 24 months’ activity, and ideally include pre-planned elements. CPD should reflect a variety of activities such as training courses, self-managed reading, research, work related activities which resulted in learning and development, events, webinars, etc.
Sponsors
Applicants are required to have three sponsors who must be Chartered members of CIWM or another professional body. One sponsor must be a CIWM Fellow.
Sponsors are required to sign a declaration which states that, in their opinion, you meet the qualities and requirements to become a Fellow.
Personal Statement - Professional attainment (Chartered Competencies)
*Please note that this aspect of the Fellow application is only required from those following the direct entry route. Chartered Members upgrading to Fellow as exempt.
There are four application windows each year. Below are this year's application deadline and interview dates.

For those who are apply to become Fellow of CIWM via the direct entry route, there is an interview fee of £125 which is payable once you have been approved for interview.
The 2026 membeship fee is £234, which is pro rated for those joining mid-year.
