Waste Duty of Care applies to everyone who handles wastes, whether as a producer, carrier or waste management organisation. This virtual training programme explores these obligations and how to comply with the Duty of Care Code of Practice.
The programme gives a good opportunity to share a range of ideas and best practice examples from both tutors and others working in a variety of settings.
What will I learn on the course?
The course is split into two interactive 3-hour sessions with a self-learning exercise between the two sessions, providing plenty of opportunity for delegates to become active participants in the knowledge-gaining process.
At the end of the course, you will be able to:
- Understand the key reasons why we have Duty of Care,
- Understand why the producer plays a fundamental role,
- Be aware of the current legislative requirements and what this means in practice,
- Appreciate how your Duty of Care obligations relate to other controls,
- Be familiar with the Statutory Code of Practice,
- Know how to complete a Waste Transfer /Information Note,
- Be familiar with various sources of information including public registers,
- Understand the role of auditing in helping to comply with your obligations,
- Be aware of the penalties and consequences of non-compliance.

The training programme consists of 3 modules:

Module 1
Live tutor led session using Zoom
- Fundamentals and overview
- Brief overview of associated legislation
- Duty of Care obligations
- Statutory Code of Practice.
Module 2
Self-managed activities accessed via CIWM Learn
- Waste iron and steel from the demolition of a building
- Waste medicines from a health centre – non cancer treatment
- Cardboard packaging – collected from a supermarket
- Out of specification whisky in bottles from distillery
- Waste synthetic hydraulic oils from a heavy plant maintenance company
- Lead-acid batteries (ex-forklift) from warehouse
- Old broken metal gates from land owned by the Forestry Commission
- Waste collected from a small newsagent – consisting of paper, plastic, out of date food
items, cans, etc.
- Used cooking oil collected from a restaurant
- Fly tipped domestic fridge
