~ How do I become a member? ~

First, you need to follow the steps to create an account. Once you have an account, you can apply for membership by visiting the membership grade that applies to you and following the application process.  Unsure which membership grade applies to you? Send your CV to the contact below and our team will be more than happy to guide you through the process.

~ Do I need to have any formal qualifications to become a member? ~

No, not at all. Our Affiliate membership grade requires no qualifications, so you can begin receiving membership benefits immediately. You can also become a Chartered Waste Manager without any formal qualifications via our Experienced Practitioner Route.

~ I’m currently a full-time student. Can I become a member? ~

Yes, of course. Our Student grade of membership is free for the duration of your course.

~ Do I need to supply any documents to apply for membership? ~

Depending on membership grade, you may need to upload copies of any relevant certificates and a copy of your CV and you may also need to provide two referees to support your application.

~ What happens next once I’ve completed the application? ~

As soon as we have your application and it has been approved, we will send you an invoice for your fees. When your fees are paid, you will be sent a welcome email, a membership certificate and you can start using your CIWM membership benefits. Affiliate applications, however, don’t need approval and payment can be made online.

~ How do I upgrade my membership? ~

Login to your account via your Member dashboard and go to the “upgrade” tab under "my account". You may be required to upload copies of any relevant certificates, a copy of your CV and a learning and development record (such as a training log, showing details of any learning and development activities you have undertaken), depending on which membership grade you want to upgrade to.

~ What commitments do I have as a Chartered member? ~

As a Chartered member, you’re committing to the Charter and the professional standards within the wastes management industry. You are also obligated to keep a Continuing Professional Development (CPD) record to demonstrate your commitment to professionalism, high standards and keeping up to date with the latest sector developments. By getting involved in CIWM activities and using CIWM resources regularly, a thorough CPD record can be easily achieved.

~ Can I develop my career in the waste industry whilst being a member? ~

You certainly can. Our Professional Development section has all the information about training courses, structured learning and development and our Continuing Professional Development (CPD) scheme.

~ Can I re-instate my membership? ~

Yes, for any grade. However, if you were previously a professional grade member (eg, Chartered or Fellow), the decision to reinstate your membership with immediate effect will be based on the time lapsed and a review of your current CV. You may be required to attend another professional interview, however.

~ Can I pay my fees by Direct Debit? ~

Yes. Just complete the direct debit mandate which will be sent to you with your invoice and tick either the Annual (one off payment) Quarterly or Monthly option.

NB please note that as we have set payment dates throughout the year the total amount payable will be split into equal payments accordingly to the dates remaining.

~ How are fees calculated? ~

Fees are calculated on a pro rata basis over a 12-month period. Depending on when you join during the current year your fees will be calculated from that date until the end of the year.

~ Can I get a receipt for the payment of my membership fees? ~

Yes. Receipts are automatically emailed to members upon receipt of any monies paid. You can also download a copy of your receipt by clicking on “My Account” and then “Subscriptions”.
