This online training course provides an understanding of waste legitimation in the UK.  

To address the highly diverse aspects applicable to different waste sites, the course is delivered by a 3-hour eLearning course, followed up by a 2 hour tutorial, which is tailored to the delegates' requirements. 

The course aims to improve the delegates' understanding of the core waste legal obligations. 

To ensure that information is up-to-date and accurate, this course has been developed with input from the waste industry, consultants with regulatory experience and experienced training professionals.

  • Key issues in relation to the legal definition of waste
  • An introduction to the permitting and licensing processes which cover the treatment, recovery and disposal of waste
  • An introduction to waste exemptions
  • How to practically comply with waste Duty of Care and other related controls
  • Essential elements of hazardous waste controls
  • Essential elements of a range of specific waste regulatory controls
  • New and future waste regulations, such as Extended Producer Responsibility and Deposit return Schemes
  • Signpost to follow-on CIWM courses and regulatory guidance. 
Tutorial
During the tutorial, we will respond to specific queries from the delegates and complete a deep dive into the following topics:
  • Overarching Regulatory Framework
  • Waste Duty of Care
    • Duty of Care Checks
    • Describing Waste including worked examples of coding waste types
  • Permitting and Licensing
    • Exemptions and Permits/Licenses
  • Producer Responsibility Legislation
  • Other Waste Legislation
  • New and Future Legislation
The tutorial will conclude with any questions and an open discussion on waste legislation.

  • Suitable for all members of staff at waste sites, but would be of specific relevance to those in a managerial, environmental or regulatory role.
  • Members of staff in other sectors who have a waste management role
  • Consultants and those who support the waste sector in a technical advisory role.

What are the entry requirements for this course?
You do not require any prior knowledge of waste regulations or waste management to enrol in this course. You need to complete the eLearning component which is part of this course, prior to attending the tutorial.
