Fire Prevention & Mitigation at Waste & Resource Management

Fire Prevention & Mitigation at Waste & Resource Management

Fire Prevention & Mitigation – Waste & Resource Management Facilities

Date: 23rd and 24th October 2024, 9am-1pm

About this training

This course is designed to assist those with a responsibility for fire prevention and mitigation at waste & resource management facilities, to promote their safe and sustainable operation.

It has been developed to provide knowledge and understanding, of fire prevention and mitigation at these complex process facilities.

The course will focus on waste and resource management facilities receiving, processing, and storing combustible waste materials, including:

  • Household Waste Recycling Centers
  • Waste Transfer Station
  • Material Recover Facilities
  • The storage and processing of waste materials including wood, paper, plastic, tyres, metals, and end of life vehicles

What will I learn on the course?

The course is delivered through two interactive 4-hour sessions, with plenty of opportunities for delegates to become active participants in the knowledge acquisition process.

  • Understand the principles of fire prevention and mitigation at waste resource management facilities
  • Understand the legislation relevant to fire prevention and mitigation responsibilities within the waste and resource management industry
  • Understand the regulatory framework, policies, and guidance relevant to fire prevention and mitigation at waste and resource management facilities
  • Understand the fire hazards, risks and control measures associated with a waste and resource management environment

Session 1 provides:

Unit 1 – An overview of the legislation and guidance applicable to waste and resource management facilities, and specifically how this regulatory framework relates to fire prevention and mitigation.

Unit 2 – An introduction to the science of fire, and specifically the principles of heat, temperature, and combustion, self-heating, exothermic reactions, and contamination, including ignition and propagation of fire, relative to common waste and recycling materials.

Unit 3 – An overview of the common causes of fire in waste and recycling materials and specifically, the fire prevention and control measures required to minimise the risks from the common causes and mechanism of fire.

Session 2 explains:

Unit 4 – How passive fire protection measures such as stack size, separation, and subdivision, reduce the risk of fire propagation and, specifically how the material type influences the control measures required.

Unit 5 – How active fire protection measures detect and suppress fire, introducing the common technologies and their application to waste and recycling materials, exploring how they are often complimentary.

Who is it for?

Anyone with responsibilities for fire safety at waste & resource management facilities, including developing and/or implementing fire prevention and mitigation strategies.

  • Managers
  • Supervisors
  • Advisors & consultants

What are the entry requirements for this course?

This course is open entry. This means that those interested in undertaking this training programme do not require any other qualifications or levels of attainment. However, you should be employed in a suitable position or be familiar with the working environment.

How will I benefit from taking the course?

The course will support you to understand the link between how to effectively manage waste and resource management facilities effectively, in order that the likelihood of fire is reduced and, that if a fire does occur, it can be dealt with efficiently to reduce the risk of harm to human health, the environment, property damage and minimise business interruptions.
