CIWM (WAMITAB) Level 4 Operator Competence for Managing Thermal Treatment Facilities
About this regulated qualification
This qualification is part of the CIWM (WAMITAB) Operator Competence Scheme. It provides technically competent managers (TCMs) with the knowledge and skills to ensure thermal treatment facilities (autoclaving, pyrolysis and gasification) comply with relevant regulations.
Assessment is conducted in the workplace through a portfolio of evidence, demonstrating competence in:
- Managing health and safety
- Minimising environmental impact
- Handling the movement, sorting and storage of waste
- Controlling work activities
- Identifying and implementing improvements
- Controlling maintenance and other engineering operations
- Overseeing procedural compliance
- Responding to emergencies
- Managing regulatory inspections
In addition to the mandatory units, learners can choose one of four optional pathways to tailor their qualification to specific operational needs:
- Pyrolysis and Gasification Hazardous Waste
- Autoclaving Hazardous Waste
- Pyrolysis and Gasification Non-Hazardous Waste
- Autoclaving Non-Hazardous Waste
This structure ensures that learners gain both core technical competence and specialist knowledge, supporting compliance and best practice.
