CIWM South West: Avonmouth Resource Recovery Centre Site Visit

Viridor EfW opened in March 2022, and is permitted to process up to 427,000 tonnes per annum. 

It receives municipal, commercial and industrial waste from the south west and is capable of generating approximately 39Mhe of electrical power, with the majority exported to the grid. 

It uses moving grate technology, on two incinerator lines to burn the waste with the furnace, designed to ensure a temperature of 850 degrees celsius is maintained for two minutes. Hot gases from the furnace flow into a boiler and then pass through the turbines to generate electricity. 

This is a great opportunity for CIWM Members to learn and see how a modern energy from waste plant operates.

Important Information

• Viridor requests visitors wear the following PPE - safety boots, hi-vis jacket, hard hat and trousers. If you need to borrow PPE from Viridor please indicate the items and sizes upon booking. 
• Viridor require all people entering operational areas to complete an induction form prior to the event, which may take up to 45 minutes to complete. A link will be sent along with joining instructions closer to the event. 
• Severn Road, Avonmouth, Pilning, Bristol, BS11 0YL - parking is available on site and access is through gate 2.
