The NHS has committed to becoming a Net Zero Carbon healthcare provider by 2040, placing increasing importance on effective, compliant, and sustainable waste management. Meeting these expectations requires specialist knowledge aligned with evolving legislation, policy, and best practice.
This comprehensive virtual training programme has been developed specifically for NHS waste professionals and is endorsed by NHS England’s 10-year Clinical Waste Strategy. Aligned with Health Technical Memorandum (HTM) 07-01, it provides a structured, practical approach to managing healthcare waste safely, sustainably, and compliantly.
Delivered through a blend of expert-led sessions and interactive learning, the programme equips you with the skills needed to meet regulatory requirements, improve operational performance, and support sustainability goals within healthcare settings. As part of your enrolment, you’ll receive CIWM Affiliate membership, with automatic progression to Technical membership (TechMCIWM) upon successful completion.

All modules must be completed to successfully complete the programme.

Course Structure and Dates
This programme combines live and self-paced learning across key modules.
The pre-course questionnaire is required by all delegates. It needs to be completed by all delegates 7 days before the course start date.
Cohort 15:
- 6th October 2026: Pre-course questionnaire must be completed and sent to the tutor.
- Module 1: 20th October 2026 – 09:30-12:30 – Duty of Care (Virtual)
- Module 2: 21st October 2026 – 09:30-13:00 – Duty of Care (Virtual)
Cohort 15:
- Module 1: 3rd November 2026 – 09:30-12:30 – ‘Waste Auditing’ (Virtual)
- 12:30 – 1:00 – Homework time
- Module 2: 4th November 2026 – 09:30-12:30 – ‘Waste Auditing’ (Virtual)
3 hours of E-learning must be completed 1 week before the virtual lesson.
Cohort 15:
- 2nd December 2026 – eLearning must be completed.
- Module 1: 9th December 2026 – 09:30-12:30 – ‘Waste Legislation Essentials’ (Virtual)
Cohort 15:
- Module 1: 20th January 2027– 09:00-13:00 – Contract Management (Virtual)
- Module 2: 21st January 2027– 09:00-13:00 – Contract Management (Virtual)
Cohort 15:
- Module 1: 4th February 2027– 09:30-12:30 – Health and Safety (Virtual)
- Module 2: 5th February 2027– 09:30-12:30 – Health and Safety (Virtual)
Cohort 15:
- Module 1: 10th March 2027– 09:00-17:00 (Virtual)
Pre-course work is required before the start of virtual lessons Modules 1 and 2. 40 minutes of homework is required before Module 3.
Cohort 15:
- 2 hours of pre-course work required no submission to the tutor.
- Module 1 and 2: 14th April 2027– 09:00-15:30 (lunch 12:00 – 13:00) (Virtual)
- 40 minutes of homework is required before module 3 starts.
- Module 3: 15th April 2027- 14:00-16:30 (Virtual)
30 minutes of homework at the end of Module 1 that must be completed before Module 2.
Cohort 15:
- Module 1:11th May 2027– 09:30-12:30 (Virtual)
- Homework:11th May 2027– 12:30-13:00
- Module 2:12th May 2027– 09:30-12:30 (Virtual)
A 2-hour eLearning module is required. This has been scheduled at the end of Waste Management Plans – Module 2, following a 1-hour lunch break.
Cohort 15
- 12 May 2027 – 13:00-15:00 (following a 1-hour lunch break)
This optional eLearning takes 3-4 hours to complete and can be undertaken at any point during the programme.
