How to become chartered

To become a Chartered Waste Manager, you need to follow the steps below:

Step 1: Ensure you meet the Entry Criteria:

Through your application, you need to ensure you demonstrate how you meet one of the three criteria given below:

 Has a degree or post-graduate qualification and has a minimum of four years relevant continuous experience in wastes management including structured training.
OR
Is a Corporate Member of a relevant Chartered Institution and has a minimum of two years relevant continuous experience in wastes management.
OR
If you don't meet either of the above criteria, you can apply via the Experienced Practitioner Route, which involves the submission of an additional report with your application form:

This route into Membership is designed for those who have considerable experience within the waste industry but have few or no formal qualifications. An additional report is required and should be submitted with your application. For full information please click HERE

Step 2: Be a CIWM member

To help you, all Chartered Waste Manager candidates MUST have CIWM membership for at least 6 months prior to interview. CIWM benefits and resources are really helpful for your interview preparations.  If you are not already a member, click for details on Fast Track Affiliate Membership.

Taking part in the institution's Structured Learning and Development scheme will also help you prepare for your interview.

Step 3: Come to a Chartered Workshop 

All candidates for Chartered membership are encouraged to attend one of our workshops to help you learn more about the application process, what happens at the professional interview and how to prepare.  There will be some short presentations and discussion exercises in small groups to help you explore the different components of the interview. It also provides an opportunity to meet other candidates.They are free to attend and last about 2 hours. Step 4: Submit your application

You can work on your application online and save it, returning to complete it if you need to.  To access your application after you've saved it, just login to your account, and go to the APPLICATIONS tab. It is not sent to us until you click on the SUBMIT button at the end of the application. 
All applications are reviewed and we will contact you to clarify any details which may be missing.  You should submit your application by the deadline for your chosen interview date. All application deadlines and interview dates are listed HERE .

Please be aware that the professional interview fee is £125.  This does not need to be submitted with your application. When your application has been reviewed and approved, you will be sent an invoice for your interview fee and you can arrange payment. You can pay online via your account. Full interview details are only issued when the professional interview fee has been paid.  

Step 5: Attend a Professional Interview

All applicants for Full Membership are required to attend a professional interview. This procedure is a common entry requirement for most professional bodies. Interview dates are set in advance and there will normally be two interview days per year in each of the Institution's Regional Centres.

You can specify on your application your preferred interview date and region. Your interview date will be confirmed when your application is approved.  You will be advised of the time and location of your interview approximately 2 weeks before your interview.

Chartered Environmentalist 

CIWM is a constituent body of The Society for the Environment, Full Members of CIWM can therefore register as a Chartered Environmentalist. Chartered Environmentalist candidates also need to attend a professional interview and these are organised on the same dates as the Chartered Waste Manager interviews.  It is possible to have a joint Chartered Waste Manager and Chartered Environmentalist interview.
