South West Centre Open Meeting

Tackling Waste Crime in the South West

Friday 13th July 2018 – Isca Centre, Exeter

Waste crime in all its forms is a serious and entrenched problem that blights local communities, damages the environment and undermines legitimate businesses, and remains a priority issue for CIWM and others in the sector.

Following a high-level seminar in the region two years ago that helped inform the 2016 CIWM ‘Fighting Waste Crime’ campaign, the South West Centre has again drawn together leading regulation, industry and legal experts to review progress since then and present the very latest thinking, efforts and initiatives to target crime and its underlying causes, and to help stop the criminals in their tracks.

In March this year the Environment Agency were given new powers to stop illegal sites from posing a risk to the environment, and local authorities are now able to issue fixed penalty notices for fly tipping. Government has also announced a further consultation and call for evidence in a review of serious and organised waste crime (Mr. Gove’s ‘beef up’ of action against waste crime), so this seminar will give you a chance to have your say, and for us as a region, to reflect on the things we would like to change.

The seminar counts 3 hours towards your Continuing Professional Development.
