EDUCATION

For everyone who works in Wastes Management, the next decade will see strong emphasis on raising professional standards in response to legislative, environmental and public pressures.  Quality professionals will be in demand.

The basis of a strong high quality professional industry lies with the underpinning knowledge provided by a sound and vigorous education, and during the last few years the growth of wastes management education has been one of the key aspects in improved standards.

Please see links to the left for information on the CIWM Awards, CIWM Accreditation of third party events and training (including academic courses), CPD (Continuing Professional Development) and SET (Structured Education and Training).  Links below will take you to information on the new Defra/CIWM Waste Treatment Technologies courses, and other wastes and resources management courses available, at all different levels, across the country.

Technical Competence

The Environmental Permitting Regulations 2007  came into force on the 6th April 2008.  These regulations allowed for 'approved' schemes to be used to demonstrate technical competence (operator competence) for permitted waste sites.  The CIWM/WAMITAB scheme was approved by Defra and WAG for England and Wales on December 22nd 2008.

Click here for the full version of the CIWM/WAMITAB Operator Competence Scheme.

For further information regarding an NVQ or VRQ please contact WAMITAB.

Click here for further details about the Environment Permit Operator's Certificate.

To register your interest/ need for an Environment Permit Operators Certificate (EPOC) contact training@ciwm.co.uk or check the training pages.

Continuing Competence - Every two years competent persons need to show they have kept up to date by passing a Continuing Competence test.  If you were considered competent under the previous system (i.e COTC holders, deemed competent, Environment Agency assessed) then you are need to pass the test in the first two year period from now until March 2011.  click here for further details and the list of topics to guide you.

If you have any questions please contact claire.poole@ciwm.co.uk or contact Wamitab on 01604 231950
