Frequently Asked Questions

How do I become a member?

First, you need to follow the steps to create an account . Once you have an account, you can apply for membership by visiting the membership grade that applies to you and following the application process. Unsure which membership grade applies to you? Visit our grade finder activity to see what grade is best for you.

Do I need to have any formal qualifications to become a member?

No, not at all. Our Affiliate membership  grade requires no qualifications, so you can begin receiving membership benefits immediately. You can also become a Chartered Resource & Waste Manager through a variety of routes. Visit our Chartered webpage to view the potential routes.

I’m currently a full-time student. Can I become a member?

Yes, of course. Our Student grade  of membership is free for the duration of your course.

Do I need to supply any documents to apply for membership?

Depending on membership grade, you may need to upload copies of any relevant certificates, a supporting statement and a copy of your CV. You may also need to provide two sponsors to support your application.

What happens next once I’ve completed the application?

As soon as we have your application and it has been approved, we will send you an invoice for your fees. When your fees are paid, you will be sent a welcome email, a membership certificate (Professional Grades only) and you can start using your CIWM membership benefits. Affiliate applications, however, don’t need approval and payment can be made online.

How do I upgrade my membership?

Log in to your account via your Member dashboard and click "my account" then select the relevant grade. You may be required to upload copies of any relevant certificates, a supporting statement, a copy of your CV, and a learning and development record.

What commitments do I have as a Chartered member?

As a Chartered member, you’re committing to the CIWM Charter and the Code of Professional Conduct contained within the Regulations points 55 to 61. Chartered members also commit to undertake and keep a record of 30 hours of continuing Professional Development (CPD) each year. This demonstrates your commitment to professionalism, high standards and keeping up to date with the latest sector developments. By getting involved in CIWM activities and using CIWM resources regularly, a thorough CPD record can be easily achieved.

Can I develop my career in the Resources and Waste sector whilst being a member?

You certainly can. Our Professional Development section has all the information about training courses, structured learning and development and our Continuing Professional Development (CPD) scheme.

Can I re-instate my membership?

Yes, for any grade. However, if you were previously a Chartered or Fellow member, the decision to reinstate your membership with immediate effect will be based on the time lapsed, a review of your current CV and continual professional development (CPD). You may be required to attend another professional interview.

Can I pay my fees by Direct Debit?

Yes. Just complete the direct debit mandate which will be sent to you with your invoice and tick either the Annual (one off payment) Quarterly or Monthly option.
NB please note that as we have set payment dates throughout the year, the total amount payable will be split into equal payments according to the dates remaining.

How are fees calculated?

Our membership year runs from 1 January to 31 December and fees are calculated on a pro-rata basis. Depending on when you join during the current year your fees will be calculated from that date until the end of the year.

Can I get a receipt for the payment of my membership fees?
