About this training

This course has been designed to assist those managing waste services contracts for the public or private sector. It has been developed to provide the knowledge, understanding, and practical skills necessary for managing services delivered by the private or third sector effectively.

It will enable delegates to gain an overview of Contract Management, to obtain an understanding of the key management areas, pitfalls, and benefits, as well as help inform decision making when managing Service Providers.

What will I learn on the course?

The course is split into four interactive 2-hour sessions with plenty of opportunities for delegates to become active participants in the knowledge-gaining process.

Session One looks at:

  • the role of contract management and contract managers

  • the transitional arrangements before the start of the contract
  • the role of the Contract Management Team (CMT) in the governance of a contract

Session Two investigates:

  • the various documents that make up a waste management Contract how they are linked together and by what means they set out how a contract should be managed
  • in what way Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) help us to measure how well a Service Provider is performing compared to their strategic goals and objectives
  • ·other ways a manager can track and monitor the performance of the Service Provider such as payment and performance mechanisms, as well as inspections, reporting and monitoring systems

    Session Three will assist:

  • understanding of risk and the importance of developing a risk register to manage the risk of financial and operational failure.
  • management of commercial risks
  • how a Pain and Gain sharing agreement allows a contractor and supplier to share profits or cost savings and share losses due to errors or cost increases.
  • why Variations to the service requirement will be made and how.

Session Four looks at the important issue of communications between the client and contractor. It will identify that;

  • it is important to have well-developed methodologies and processes in place to facilitate this.
  • outline the purpose and content of a communications plan contract meetings, contract closure, and renewal procedures.
  • In addition, it will summarize the key information required to produce a contract management plan (CMP) which will explain how the contract will be managed.

    Self-learning

  • Between each session, ‘take away’ tasks will be provided to help learners recap on learning content covered in the previous session and to help learners prepare for the next session.
