CIWM welcomes a positive vision for resources and waste in the Clean Growth Strategy

CIWM has welcomed the publication today of the Government’s Clean Growth Strategy, the first of in a series of long awaited strategies and plans that are needed to shape and drive the UK’s progress towards a low carbon, resource efficient and sustainable future.

“In this strategy, we have the clearest indication yet of the Government’s future policy on resources and waste and the articulation of a positive vision to become a zero avoidable waste economy by 2050,” says CIWM chief executive Dr Colin Church.  “Proposals to eliminate food waste to landfill by 2030, incentivise more resource efficient products and processes through extended producer responsibility, and use data to mobilise sustainable local economic development and innovation through LEPs, are all potential game-changers. In addition, the suggestion that materials should be managed in relation to their environmental impact opens the door to smarter targets in the future. The support and funding for innovation, including new technological solutions to manage long term landfill emissions, is also highly welcome.

“The strategy sounds a positive note at a broader level as well. It reaffirms the UK’s commitment to decarbonisation, recognises that opportunities must now explored across a wider range of economic and industrial activities, and provides greater clarity and certainty to the businesses and investors that will be key to delivering the ambitions it contains,” adds Dr Church. “Importantly, it also lays the groundwork for a more integrated, cross-government approach that so many stakeholders, including CIWM, have been calling for.
