Wessex NMN - Nurturing Natural Resources – 100% Green

The CIWM SW Wessex New Member Network Group are hosting an event on the 5th September at the Sustainable Energy Visitor Centre operated by Wyke Farms. The Centre tells the story of the company’s green journey.

Wyke Farms, in the heart of Somerset, have been family farming for over 150 years. The goal of the company is to create a sustainable working farm, harnessing natural resources to source electricity and gas from both solar and biogas generated from farm and dairy waste.

Wyke Farms generate renewable electricity and gas from anaerobic digestion. They utilise the by-products and wastes of cheese making and from the farm along with other feedstocks to produce renewable energy. The electric is used to help power the AD site and Cheese Dairy. The gas is cleaned and injected into the main gas grid.

They have installed energy saving solutions throughout their sites including inverters and LED lighting.
On two of their farms they have installed solar panels on farm roofs, they have a water recovery plant at their cheese dairy, they run several electric vehicles charged using renewable energy.
