About this Training

This course provides the opportunity to learn more about “Behaviour Change” within the specific context of the resources and waste sector. The overall aim of this training is to give those working in the world of resources and waste management a better understanding of how they can influence behaviour, thereby strengthening the effectiveness of their efforts to encourage change. Whether citizens, customers, or colleagues, the principles and practices outlined in this course will help participants to change waste-related behaviours, supporting the delivery of a more resource-efficient society.

What will I learn on the course?

Across seven modules, the course introduces participants to the COM-B Behaviour Change Model (Michie et. al. 2011) and explores why it can be difficult to influence people’s behaviour. It looks at how to identify what might be needed in terms of Capability, Opportunity, and Motivation to shift behaviour; and the strategies and tools that can be used, often in combination, to effect change. Participants will be introduced to the Behaviour Change Hierarchy developed by CIWM’s Behaviour Change Strategic Expert Group, which visualises the relationship between the choice of strategic approach to behaviour change and communications. The course also looks at common behavioural heuristics (the psychological short-cuts that we use to make decisions) and the influences on our behaviour. Participants will define a desired behaviour* and use COM-B to diagnose what is driving current behaviour and what might be needed to change it. Finally, participants will design their own intervention to influence change using different intervention types and policy actions, as the basis for a lively discussion with their co-learners! *Ideally, this will be a behaviour relevant to the role/ work of the participant, but can be scenario-based.
