CIWM Welcomes New Early Careers President

CIWM has announced a key change within its Presidential Team, as Emma Mulligan takes over as Early Careers President ahead of the new presidential term. Emma succeeds Charlotte Davies, who holds the distinction of being the first person ever appointed to the role.

During her tenure, Charlotte has been an outstanding advocate for emerging talent across the waste and resources sector, ensuring that the next generation of professionals has had a genuine voice at the highest levels of the institution throughout a period of considerable change. Leading a dedicated team of Early Careers Ambassadors, Charlotte successfully established the foundation for the role, driving key initiatives including the reverse mentoring of Trustees and the leadership team, promoting the benefits of professional membership, and spearheading outreach programmes to colleges and universities.

CIWM extends its sincere thanks to Charlotte for her significant contribution, her creative approach to engaging new audiences, and the dedication she has brought to the position.

Emma joins the Presidential Team as an existing member of the Early Careers community and will champion the interests of emerging professionals across the full spectrum of entry points into the sector, from apprentices and graduates to those transitioning from other industries.

About Emma Mulligan
Emma currently works as a Senior Consultant at Rooted, with over six years of experience in consultancy within the waste and resources sector, having previous held roles at WSP and AECOM. She brings a strong track record of supporting organisations on sustainability, circular economy, and waste and resource management challenges across the UK for both public and private clients.

Emma is an active member of CIWM, currently serving as an Early Careers Ambassador and an elected Regional Committee Member for London and Southern Counties. She previously chaired the CIWM Professional Development Network (PDN) for the region, where she played a key role in strengthening early careers engagement and delivering initiatives to support professional development within the sector.

Vision for the role
As an early career professional herself, Emma is passionate about representing and supporting those at the start of their careers. She has a clear understanding of the challenges and opportunities facing this cohort, alongside practical experience in designing engagement strategies that resonate with early careers professionals.

As the new Early Careers President, Emma is committed to building an inclusive and dynamic community that empowers the next generation of waste and resources professionals. She is particularly focused on creating opportunities for collaboration, skills development, and outreach programmes, while encouraging fresh perspectives that can help drive positive change across the sector. She is excited to lead a team that will inspire and support emerging talent, helping to shape a more sustainable and forward-thinking future for the waste and resources industry.

This development takes place ahead of the Presidential Inauguration on 18 June, where CIWM will welcome the new President for 2026/27, Vicki Hughes. This follows Dr David Greenfield's Presidential term for 2025/26 focused on 'Lost Opportunities: Winning back materials to drive the UK's circular economy'.
