CIWM responds to UK Government plan to tackle ‘forever chemicals’
CIWM has issued a response following the UK Government’s announcement of a new plan to tackle ‘forever chemicals’ (PFAS), highlighting the critical role the resources and waste sector will play in managing these legacy materials.
Dan Cooke, Director of Policy, Communications and External Affairs, said: “CIWM welcomes the UK Government’s new plan to tackle ‘forever chemicals,’ noting that the resources and waste sector will be required to pick up the pieces and manage these legacy issues on behalf of producers to deliver the plan.
We recognise the scale of this challenge and are not standing still. The sector is actively strengthening its infrastructure and technical expertise to address the problem. There is already extensive work underway across Europe that the UK can learn from, and we welcome the focus on these material streams to ensure our own national response is both strong and effective.
The resources and waste sector is not the problem but part of the solution to tackling ‘forever chemicals’, and we remain committed to transitioning these legacy issues into managed outcomes that protect public health and the environment.”
