Dr Anna Willetts announced as CIWM junior vice president

11 June 2019

Dr Anna Willetts has been announced as CIWM junior vice president (JVP), following the first ever members council last Friday (7 June).

Anna (pictured) is senior associate at Clyde & Co and has been practicing environmental law for 10 years.

Prior to becoming a lawyer, she was an environmental consultant for 5 years advising on environmental permitting, hydrogeological risk assessments and EIAs, after completing her PhD in landfill engineering.

Anna has been a member of CIWM for 20 years, after having joined when she was a student. She became a Fellow five years ago and is vice chair of the CIWM Regulatory Special Interest Group, as well as centre chair for the East Anglian Centre Council.

Among Anna’s many CIWM hats, she is also New Members' Network co-ordinator for the East Anglian region.

She is also Co-Convenor for the UK Environmental Law Association's Waste Working Party.

The appointment was made at the first ever CIWM members' council, which took place Friday 7 June, following the restructuring of CIWM governance system.

The candidates each made a presentation to the members' council and the presidential team, after which a decision was made.

Anna will take up her full role as junior vice president in November at the Presidential election. Until then she will hold the title junior vice president elect.

Anna commented on her appointment, saying: “I am delighted to have been chosen as the next junior vice president of CIWM.

“I am passionate about the work of CIWM, having been a member for CIWM for 20 years since my student days and a Fellow for 5 years.

“I hope to be able to continue the good work of past, current and future Presidents for the Institution.

“This year was a new process for election of the JVP. The newly convened Members' Council was responsible for choosing the JVP rather than the Board of Trustees.

“This was a fresh set of faces, some of whom I had not met before, so I felt that this was a new and different way of appointing the next JVP.

“I very much enjoyed presenting to them and am privileged and excited that they chose me for this role.”
