CIWM Trustee, Dr Anna Willetts, Addresses Illegal Waste Dumping on BBC Breakfast

Dr Anna Willetts, CIWM Trustee and Past-President, appeared on BBC Breakfast this weekend to discuss the key issue of illegal waste dumping. During the segment, the impact of this widespread problem was examined, alongside the significant challenges it presents for the resources and waste sector.

CIWM is encouraged by the sustained national media attention that continues to highlight the scale of serious and organised waste crime and its negative impact on the public and the environment, and we continue to work closely with the UK Government, media and sector partners to maintain focus and close loopholes in this key area.

As the leading professional membership body for the resources and waste sector, CIWM is dedicated to ensuring our industry is defined by its high standards and professional integrity, rather than the illegal activities that seek to undermine it. Illegal dumping at all levels causes significant distress to local communities and inflicts real damage on our environment and economy. This activity risks tarnishing the reputation of the responsible, professional sector that delivers vital services to the community.

CIWM remains committed to tackling this scourge by identifying systemic gaps, advocating for strong enforcement, and ensuring perpetrators are held fully to account.

We welcome the BBC’s commitment to raising awareness of this important issue as we continue to lead the way in tackling waste crime alongside our sector agencies and partners.
