CIWM Responds to UK Government on Waste Crime and Industry Statement

CIWM has issued a letter from CEO, Sarah Poulter, to Mary Creagh CBE MP, Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State at the Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs.

The communication addresses the recent illegal waste site incident in Kidlington, Oxfordshire, and the subsequent government commentary on the state of the UK waste management sector.

The letter specifically references a widely reported government statement describing a "whole system failure in the waste industry," providing CIWM's perspective on the matter.

Defra has clarified the comments with the following statement: "This government values the hard work of the waste management industry in supporting our shared ambition to transition to a circular economy."

They added: "Their important work is undermined by the activities of waste criminals, who harm the environment, economy, and communities. We are committed to tackling this criminality and delivering much-needed reform to the system as a whole.”
