The BDR Waste Treatment Facility is a state of the art waste plant that handles all of the leftovers household (residual) waste from homes across Barnsley, Doncaster and Rotherham as part of a 25 year contract with Renewi, one of Europe's leading waste to product companies. The facility comprises of a 250,000 tonne Mechanical Biological Treatment plant and 18,000 tonne dry anaerobic digestion facility, one of only three dry AD plants in the UK.
A visit to the facility takes around 2 hours, it starts with a talk about the facility, its purpose, how it works, the benefits it has brought to the area and some of the issues we have encountered, there will then be a brief safety induction before we take you on a tour of the facility. Please note that this is an operational facility and as such there are some areas that is is not possible to take visitors. On the tour we will visit the reception hall, control room, and the exterior of the refinement section and dry anaerobic digestion plant where you can see the operation in action.
The facility tour is only open to over 18's, it includes a walk of around 1.5 kilometres and although lifts are available in some locations, the tour includes several steps and can be loud in places. If you have a mobility, sensory, audio or visual disability, please discuss your needs with us un advance of the tour so that we can adapt the session to ensure your comfort and inclusion.
Requirements:
Trousers are required to participate in a tour, these do not need to be hi-vis. You will be required to wear personal protective equipment whilst in operational areas of our site, this can be provided for you during the visit if required.
The PPE required is a hi-vis jacket or vest, gloves, safety glasses (overglasses are only acceptable for glasses wearers), orange hard hat and lace up safety boots (we do not allow rigger boots or wellies).

The site is on Bolton Road opposite the Patrick Tobin Business Park. If you are using the post code (S36 7LL) satnav will take you to the business park on the opposite side of Bolton Road to the facility.

Upon entering the site, please take the first right to access the car park, all visitors are asked to reverse park in the main car park, parking is limited so please car share or use public transport where possible. Enter the administration building, which sits in the car park, by the automatic doors to the left hand side as you face the building. The reception will only be staffed between 09:45 - 10:00 on the day of your visit. Here you will be asked to sign in and make your way upstairs.
