Commercial Waste Management and Street Scene Challenges in Dense Urban Environments
The London and Southern Counties New Members Network is hosting an event to discuss the challenges of commercial waste management and street scene challenges in dense urban environments.
The Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, wants to improve air quality by reducing poisonous emissions by more than half by 2025 across the whole of London. One of the ways to do this is by cutting the number of dirty vehicles on London's roads. Recognising that the commercial waste sector has a role to play in this, new innovative and sustainable transport measures are needed to clean up London’s heavily polluted air.
The London Environment Plan places a renewed emphasis on the importance of commercial waste recycling. By facilitating waste consolidation, reducing waste, implementing electric vehicle infrastructure and also educating business employees on the reasons behind effective waste management in the workplace it can help to improve London’s air quality and provide street scene benefits. From preferred supplier schemes, efficient routing, educating employees, recycling relevant and frequently used items such as coffee cups, there are many new and innovative solutions to help business recycling more and improve air quality. This meeting explores the solutions and looks at ways in which companies are already taking steps forward to lead best practices.
The Mayor of London expects businesses to be offered the same level of recycling service offered to households. By placing a stronger emphasis on the importance of commercial waste recycling it opens doors for aligning waste practices for Londoners across their daily lives rather than the “just at home” attitude adopted by many.
We have invited a range of speakers to discuss managing commercial waste where arisings are high, density of people is high but also congestion and air pollution are high. We have also arranged a site visit to the most innovative waste consolidation centre in London that uses limited car parking space to reduce waste vehicle movements in Piccadilly and St James’s in the centre of London.
