Course Details

The following programme has been designed in line with the Health Technical Memorandum 07-01: Safe and sustainable management of healthcare waste, and the NHS clinical waste strategy. The foundations of courses are based on CIWM expertise in the waste and resource sector and are all contextualised to meet the needs of the above reports ensuring that the course programme assists in the drive to develop in-house workforce knowledge and capability for the improvement of the management of wastes within the NHS. The programme will cover 10 courses.

Cohort 15

October – Duty of Care

The pre-course questionnaire is required by all delegates. It needs to be completed by all delegates 7 days before the course start date.
6th October 2026– Pre-course questionnaire must be completed and sent to the tutor.
Module 1: 20th October 2026– 09:30-12:30 – Duty of Care – Virtual Zoom training session
Module 2: 21st October 2026 – 09:30-13:00 – Duty of Care – Virtual Zoom training session

November– Waste Auditing

The pre-course questionnaire is required by all delegates. It needs to be completed by all delegates 7 days before the course start date.
30 minutes of homework given at the end of session 1 that must be completed before session 2. 30 minutes at the end of session, has been added for this. Homework does not need to be submitted to the tutor.
Module 1: 3rd November 2026–09:30-12:30- Waste Auditing’ – Virtual Zoom training session
30 minutes will be added to the end of the session for the homework.
Module 2: 4th November 2026- 09:30-12:30 – Waste Auditing’ – Virtual Zoom training session

December – Waste Legislation Essentials

3 hours of E-learning must be completed 1 week before the virtual lesson
2nd December 2026 – E-Learning must be completed
30 minutes will be added to the end of the session for the homework.
Module 1: 9th December 2026– 09:30 – 12:30 – Waste Legislation Essentials’ – Virtual Zoom training session

January– Contract Management

Module 1: 20th January 2027- 09:00 – 13:00 – Contract Management – Virtual Zoom training session
Module 2: 21st January 2027 – 09:00 – 13:00 – Contract Management – Virtual Zoom training session

February– Health & Safety

Module 1: 4th February 2027  – 09:30 – 12:30 – Health & Safety – Virtual Zoom training session
Module 2: 5th February 2027 – 09:30 – 12:30 – Health & Safety – Virtual Zoom training session

March – Sustainability & Circular

Module 1: 10th March 2027– 09:00 – 17:00 – 1 hour for lunch and 5-minute break once an hour. – Virtual Zoom training

April – Hazardous Waste

Pre-course work is required before the start of virtual lessons Modules 1&2. 40 minutes of homework is required before Module 3. .
2 hours of pre-course work required no submission to the tutor.
Module 1 & 2: 14th April 2027– 09:00 – 15:30 (lunch 12:00 – 13:00)
40 minutes of homework is required before module 3 starts.
Module 3: 15th April 2027- 14:00 – 16:30

May – Waste Management Plans

30 minutes of homework at the end of Module 1 that must be completed before Module 2. .
Module 1: 11th May 2027– 09:30 – 12:30 – Waste Management Plan – Virtual Zoom training session
Homework: 11th May 2027– 12:30 – 13:00
Module 2: 12th May 2027 – 09:30 – 12:30 Waste Management Plan – Virtual Zoom training session

Sharps Management – E-Learning

2 hours of E-learning required. Added at the end of Waste Management Plans part 2 after a 1-hour lunch break.
12th May 2027– 13:00 – 15:00 – (allows for 1 hour’s lunch break)

Permitting on-demand E-Learning (optional)

30 minutes of homework at the end of Module 1 that must be completed before Module 2. .
3-4 hours E-learning This can be carried out at any point during the programme.
