Responsibilities for different functions within waste management are often confusing. Local councils, regulatory bodies and other organisations all have a part to play in dealing with waste within the UK and face many challenges within the waste management industry in changing how we currently manage our waste.
The waste industry has also been singled out as one the most dangerous in terms of health and safety. The activities carried out within the Waste Management Industry are very wide and varied and do incur many risks. The number of fatal incidents is over ten times the national average and accident rates are four times the national average. The incidents predominantly occur to refuse/recycling collection workers who manually handle and sort waste.
The CIWM Wessex New Generation Group are hosting an event on Thursday 30th October 2008 which will provide an introduction to health and safety within the waste sector and an overview of waste management responsibilities. There will also be speakers from the various organisations involved with waste management who will provide an overview of their roles and responsibilities.
The cost of the event is £10 for CIWM members and £30 for non-members. Students can attend free of charge. This includes coffees, lunch and event papers.
The meeting will be held at Merley House, Wimborne starting at 9.30am and finishing at 12.30pm with lunch.
If you would like to attend please could you complete and return the faxback form or e-mail details by Monday 20th October 2008. You will then be sent full details of the programme and a location map.
