| Description | A pioneering £4 million recycling facility - the first of its kind in northern Europe - has been officially opened in South Wales. The state-of-the-art TyreGenics plant at Baglan, near Port Talbot, will reprocess some five million used tyres each year into rubber ‘crumb’, making Wales a leader in automotive recycling initiatives. The project has been part-funded by the European Union’s Objective 1 programme. The innovative process uses liquid nitrogen to freeze shreds of tyre until highly brittle, then mechanical ‘hammers’ smash the rubber into tiny pieces known as ‘crumb’. The product has a number of uses, including the production of artificial sports pitches, insulation products and rubber flooring. |
