Classes of Membership

MEMBER (MCIWM) - Chartered Waste Manager                                   Click HERE for more details

(This class of membership is also known as Full Member or Corporate Member i.e. when achieved, you are a Member of the Corporate Body; this is still a class of membership for an individual.)

Entry Criteria:

Has a degree or post-graduate qualification and has a minimum of four years relevant continuous experience in wastes management including structured training.

OR

Is a Corporate Member of a relevant Chartered Institution and has a minimum of two years relevant continuous experience in wastes management.
In all cases applicants will be required to satisfy a Professional Interview Panel. This will consist of senior members of the Institution and candidates will be asked to give a brief presentation on their area of work. Full details will be sent prior to interview. Experienced Practitioner Route

This route into Membership is designed for those who have considerable experience within the waste industry but have few or no formal qualifications.  For full information please click here - Experienced Practitioner Route

LICENTIATE MEMBER (LCIWM)

Entry Criteria:

Has a degree or post graduate qualification, a minimum of one year's experience in the wastes management industry and has undergone a period of vocational training consisting of either:-

- satisfactory completion of a module of a post-graduate course on wastes management provided by a university, and approved for this purpose by CIWM; or

- satisfactory completion of a full waste management COTC at NVQ level 4 awarded by WAMITAB, City and Guilds or SQA; or

- satisfactory completion of the HNC in Wastes Management/Foundation Degree in wastes Management; or

- satisfactory completion of the Open University's Diploma in Pollution Control; or

- satisfactory completion of a relevant Higher Level Award (HLA) at level 4; or

- such other programme of vocational training as shall be approved from time to time by CIWM's Education, Training and Membership Committee.

A Licentiate Member is a Corporate Member of the Institution and is therefore entitled to full voting rights in matters of Institution business.

GRADUATE MEMBER (GradMCIWM)

Entry Criteria:

Any person who is concerned with wastes management and has a degree but does not have the necessary continuous relevant experience required for Corporate Membership.

ASSOCIATE MEMBER (AssocMCIWM)

Entry Criteria:

Has achieved passes in two A levels or holds a Higher National Certificate, or an equivalent qualification and has a minimum of five years relevant continuous experience in wastes management.

OR

Has achieved a full wastes management COTC at NVQ level 4 awarded by WAMITAB, City and Guilds or SQA.

TECHNICIAN MEMBER (TechMCIWM)

Entry Criteria:

Holds a National Certificate, or an equivalent qualification and has a minimum of three years relevant continuous experience in wastes management, including structured training.

OR
Has achieved a full Wastes Management COTC at NVQ level 3 awarded by WAMITAB, City and Guilds or SQA.

OR
Satisfactory completion of a relevant VRQ at level 3.

STUDENT MEMBER

Entry Criteria:

A person who is undertaking a course of study and examination relevant to wastes management. This grade is available to both full-time and part-time students.  Full-time students receive their first year's membership free of charge. AFFILIATE MEMBER (Fast Track)

Entry Criteria:

A person who is involved with wastes management, but as yet, is not eligible for any other grade of membership.

SENIOR CLASSES

FELLOW (FCIWM)

Entry Criteria:

Any Member who has shown evidence of distinguished professional attainment in the sphere of wastes management, and has been a Corporate Member for at least seven years. Candidates for Fellowship need to be nominated by either three Fellows of the Institution or six Corporate Members.

LIFE MEMBER

Entry Criteria:

A Member or Fellow of the Institution who ceases to be actively engaged in wastes management may be transferred to the class of Life Member with the approval of the General Council. A candidate for election to Life Member shall normally have rendered exceptional service to the wastes management industry or the Institution.


RETIRED MEMBER

Entry Criteria:

A Member of the Institution who ceases to be actively engaged in wastes management may transfer to the grade of Retired Member.


The above is intended as a guide and all elections to membership are at the absolute discretion of the General Council of the Institution as laid down in the Charter, Bylaws and Regulations.
