On International Women’s Day 2023, CIWM would like to take the opportunity to celebrate the role of women and raise awareness of gender equity in the resources and waste management sector.

In our EDI survey, published earlier this year, we concluded that “poor EDI practices have a negative impact on all of us”. It is therefore more important than ever to celebrate days that recognise true equality and have a positive influence on our people.

Our team members have today been recognising the IWD2023 ‘embracing equity’ theme, acknowledging the efforts of those who strive for a diverse, equitable and inclusive sector, both in the UK and around the world.

Our Regional Centres have also been involved, galvanising support from CIWM members around the UK and Ireland to raise awareness of IWD2023 and recognise the contribution of women to the sector.

CIWM is proud that the three most senior roles in the organisation – President, Chair and CEO – are occupied by women, and we have 41 female Fellows (who make up 25% of the total Fellows) who also represent the best of the sector with their considerable contribution and achievements.

We want to drive change and ensure our organisation, membership and sector is truly diverse and inclusive, but recognise there is still much to do.  Our EDI strategy outlines the steps we will take and the focus areas for action as we move towards everyone having an equal place on the journey to a world beyond waste.

Want to get involved?  Take a photo in a self-embrace of yourself, your team or as a male ally to support equal opportunities, diversity and inclusion and share on social media, using the hashtags #EmbraceEquity and #IWD2023.
