CIWM and WasteAid Celebrate the Success of the Dennakuwo Circular Economy Network in The Gambia

As The Gambia grapples with a pressing waste crisis characterised by inadequate waste management infrastructure and widespread pollution, the Chartered Institution of Wastes Management (CIWM) proudly announces the impactful achievements of its three-year collaboration with WasteAid in establishing the Dennakuwo Circular Economy Network.

Launched in early 2022, this initiative aims to create sustainable waste management solutions and foster a circular economy in the Greater Banjul Area, home to approximately 58% of the nation’s population.

The Dennakuwo Circular Economy Network—a Mandinka word that signifies "together we can"—has quickly evolved into a vibrant hub for innovation, collaboration, and training among Gambian entrepreneurs, local government representatives, students, and community members.

Since its inception, the programme has delivered over 17,000 hours of training, a vital component in raising professional standards in waste management. Notable training sessions include:
Business Market Training
Finance Training
Customer Service and Circular Economy Training
Plastic Recycling Demonstration
Advanced Compost Making
Micro-enterprise Development Training

With 89% of network members participating in at least one training or event, the programme has proven transformative for many.

Other significant achievements include:
The growing network membership, which now exceeds 300, with over 80% of participants reporting positive impacts on their businesses.
The Waste-to-Use Challenge, focused on textiles, plastics, and organics, has awarded a total of £22,000 in prize funding to nurture key initiatives.
Support for nine emerging enterprises through financial aid, training, and mentoring, alongside numerous technical training sessions and showcasing events.
Deployment of CIWM representatives on technical site visits to enhance support for Kanifing Municipal Council.

“All of us at CIWM are incredibly proud of our partnership with WasteAid, and the work of the ever-growing Gambian Circular Economy Network," stated Sarah Poulter, CEO of CIWM. "This initiative exemplifies how a direct link between the UK and Gambia can facilitate a dynamic exchange of expertise and innovation, ultimately fostering a circular economy that protects the world’s environment and resources for future generations.”

The Dennakuwo Circular Economy Network has been an outstanding example of how practical, collaborative action can address urgent waste management challenges in The Gambia. Going forward this model could be applied to other developing nations to promote sustainable practices.
