Sustainability is one of the most important issues facing society and the world today. Individuals and organisations can no longer use resources without consideration as we understand that reducing waste is important, and that we have a responsibility to act responsibly when it comes to reuse, recycling and waste. This course will not only help those attending understand what sustainable development is but provide practical examples of how waste management has been used to deliver the sustainable development goals. The SDGs are the ultimate to-do list for making this planet a better place by 2030 which includes ending extreme poverty, fighting inequality and fixing climate change.

Sustainable Procurement 23rd June 12:00 - 13:00 via Zoom

Net Zero 30th June 12:00 - 13:00 via Zoom

 

Waste and resource management plays a crucial role in reaching the UK’s net-zero goals. Increasingly waste professional’s need to understand the concept of net zero and how it relates to waste management policies, practices and performance.
This course provides an overview of the background to Net Zero, explains what Net Zero and Carbon Offsetting mean as well as identifying the challenges of delivering Net Zero. It goes on to look at the contents of a Carbon Reduction Plan, a requirement for public sector contracts, from a waste perspective. It also offers an insight into the use of Carbon Capture, Utilization, and Storage (CCUS) in the industry.
This virtual course has been designed to help those managing and delivering waste services for the public or private sector to gain a basic understand of Net Zero. 

Circular Economy 7th July 12:00 - 13:00 via Zoom

 

Progress towards the circular economy will likely lead to the waste management industry's expansion beyond its traditional areas of operations, opening new opportunities. This course will not only help those attending understand what a circular economy is but address the business models that not only aim to generate resource productivity improvements in innovative ways but also cut costs, generate revenue and enhance customer value and differentiation. It will look at the barriers and benefits of this circular transaction from a waste management perspective.
This virtual course has been designed to aid those managing and delivering waste services for the public or private sector to develop ideas and actions that consider the wider impact of their operations.

Climate Change Risk Assessment 14th July 12:00 - 13:00 via Zoom


If you operate a waste site, it’s important that you consider whether a changing climate could affect your operations, including how it might affect your ability to comply with your permit.
If your permit was issued:
- on or after 1 April 2023, you need to integrate climate change adaptation planning into your management system
- before April 2023, whilst your management system should already consider climate impacts, you need to complete a climate change adaptation risk assessment by 1 April 2024
