Introduction
Disposal of air pollution control residues (fly ash) arising from thermal treatment facilities used to be an on-going challenge for plant operators. Following 15 years of research undertaken at Imperial College, London and The University of Greenwich, Carbon8 has harnessed Accelerated Carbonation Technology for the treatment of thermal residues, producing a sustainable carbon negative aggregate.

During the process, carbon dioxide is permanently captured as stable carbonates.  The carbonated material is blended with binders and fillers and then pelletised to form a rounded aggregate that has a number of applications in construction.  The resulting aggregate has captured more carbon dioxide than is used in the energy required in its manufacture, resulting in the world’s first carbon negative aggregate.

The Carbon8 process has recently been recognised in a United Nations Environment Report and acknowledged as making “a demonstrable contribution to the developing European circular economy”.  This site visit to the Avonmouth plant, arranged by CIWM SW West of England New Member Network, gives members the opportunity to learn more about this unique process and have a guided tour of the facility https://c8a.co.uk/about-us/
