CIWM represents waste sector in government’s Green Jobs Delivery Group

CIWM is pleased to announce that its President, Dr. Adam Read, who is also External Affairs Director at SUEZ recycling and recovery UK, has been selected to join the UK’s new Green Jobs Delivery Group. The inaugural meeting of this Group was held on Wednesday 11th May when Energy Minister Greg Hands acted as co-chair alongside E.ON UK Chief Executive Michael Lewis. Leaders from business, industry, trade unions and academia have been handpicked to act on upskilling and training the green workforce of the future. The Group will prove vital in creating and supporting up to 480,000 skilled well-paid green jobs by 2030.

The UK’s green industrial revolution is a key part in the government’s plan for growing the economy and creating high-skilled, high-wage jobs across the country. The Group will help ensure the UK has the skilled workforce it needs to build clean industries in our industrial heartlands and transition to cheaper renewables in the face of rising fossil fuel prices. It will also ensure that workers, businesses and local areas are supported throughout the transition in eliminating the UK’s contribution to climate change by 2050.

Dr Adam Read, President of CIWM and External Affairs Director at SUEZ, comments:

“The creation of skilled green jobs is essential to sustainably rebuilding the UK economy and the creation of a more circular economy. The hugely diverse and innovative recycling and resource management industry is just one of the sectors that will benefit from this increased pool of talent.  The Chartered Institute of Wastes Management (CIWM) looks forward to working on the Green Jobs Delivery Group, supporting the creation of these vital opportunities and promoting the sector as an exciting and rewarding place in which to build a career as we continue our journey to a world beyond waste.”

Chair of the Delivery Group and Minister for Energy and Clean Growth, Greg Hands, said:

“The UK’s most important asset is its workforce, and our new Delivery Group will help us ensure employers have the know-how and employees the skills to drive our transition to becoming the world’s leading green economy.  Over the last 3 decades, the UK has achieved record clean growth, with emissions tumbling by 44% - faster than any G7 nation - while the green economy has grown by almost 80%.  There are already over 430,000 jobs in low-carbon businesses and their supply chains across the country.”
