Advanced Waste Classification (Waste Soils) - Virtual

Note – there is an expectation that delegates will already have thorough knowledge of the use and importance of the List of Wastes (EWC) codes and have had training on the assessment process including hazardous substances and hazardous properties

This course is aimed at anyone with existing knowledge and understanding of hazardous waste and its classification and coding but needs to apply it to and cover the specifics relating to waste soils.

You might be a waste consultant, contaminated land contractor/ specialist, construction waste specialist, Landfill operator or carrier/ broker specialising in contaminated soils, or anyone who manages waste soils and needs to ensure they are managed legally and safely.

AIMS & OBJECTIVES
At the end of the course, you will:

Understand the definition of hazardous waste and stepwise process for classification and assessment – with respect to the assessment of soil and excavation wastes
Have a thorough working knowledge of using Technical Guidance WM3
Be able to carry out the worst-case compound calculations for metals
Understand the assessment of oil contaminated wastes – including the assessment of unknown oils
Apply the knowledge to assessment of soils – and understand the common issues and challenges with assessment and interpreting laboratory reports

MODULES
Module 1:

18th October: You will get access to:
self-managed interactive on line module to refresh and check knowledge and understanding of the key elements of hazardous waste coding and classification – this must be completed prior to the first live tutor led session

Module 2:
21st October 14:00-16:30
Virtual Live tutor led session 1 via zoom

Recap – waste classification and assessment
Classification and assessment and the use of the List of Wastes codes (including debrief of pre-course exercise)
Hazardous substances and hazardous properties (plus debrief of pre-course work)
Importance of HP14 ecotoxic for the assessment of soils
‘inert’ classification
Use and misuse of WAC analysis
Worst-case Compounds
Introduction
Calculation of worst-case compounds

Module 3:
Self managed learning

Exercise to develop and calculate worst-case compounds for selected metal cations.
Pre- recorded session – Moisture content correction
Understanding that analysis is typically reported on a dry weight basis and how moisture content correction should be undertaken to reflect the actual concentrations of hazardous substances in the waste as received.

Module 4
28th October 14:00-16:30
Live tutor led session (via zoom)

Assessment of soils wastes and analysis (inorganics)
Debrief worst case compounds exercise
Q&A Moisture Content Correction
Asbestos contaminated soils
Application of the assessment process to soils and excavates wastes including delegate exercises
Potential to use screening values (metals)

Module 5
self directed learning

Pre-recorded session – Assessment of oil contaminated wastes (TPH) - A detailed look at the assessment of the oil contaminated wastes plus assessment of unknown oils using a marker compound
Exercise – TPH and oil contamination
Reading – Site investigation reports (including reading an example SI report provided)

Module 6
