UK - HOUSE OF LORDS TO INVESTIGATE WASTE REDUCTION
The House of Lords Science and Technology Select Committee has appointed a sub-committee to look at sustainable approaches to waste reduction. The inquiry will focus on the first level of the waste hierarchy, waste reduction, and will look into ways in which products and production processes can be made more sustainable and therefore produce less waste. HSE GUIDANCE ISSUED FOR HANDLING NEEDLES AND TRAINING GUIDELINES FOR THE WASTE AND RECYCLING INDUSTRY
Heath and Safety Executive (HSE) have recently published a new guidance note on handling needles in the waste and recycling industry. This guidance covers issues such as identifying risks, assessing the risks, preventing and controlling risk and help for employees who regularly deal with needles. The HSE have also published UK Health and Safety Training: Guidelines for the waste management and recycling industry, the document sets out guidelines on the basic requirements for training in five key areas. ENVIRONMENT AGENCY FACT SHEET ON CHANGES TO DEALING WITH CONTAMINATED SOIL WASTE

SURVEY REPORT ON COMMUNITY COMPOSTING ACTIVITY
A new report on Community Composting Activity in the UK has been published by The Open University.  The report highlights the diversity of groups and organisations involved in community composting; reports on numbers of sites and material composted; the involvement of volunteers and trainees; the type of work undertaken with local authorities and explores wider social and environmental objectives of different groups.  The survey is a key part of a Defra funded project called ‘Unlocking the Potential of Community Composting. EHS HAZARDOUS WASTE GUIDANCE ON ASBESTOS
The Environment and Heritage Service have published hazardous waste guidance on asbestos. This guidance covers issues such as managing and removal of asbestos on a site, Disposal of waste asbestos, The classification of asbestos as hazardous waste. FREE EPP TECHNICAL COMPETENCE BRIEFING SESSION AND WORKSHOP
CIWM/WAMITAB and ESA/EUS have both submitted proposals for revised schemes for operators to demonstrate Technical Competence. On the 21st September, in conjunction with Defra, we will be holding a morning briefing session and workshop to discuss these proposals and get your views.
