The Scottish New Generation group visited TEG Environmental Ltd’s newly installed In-vessel Composting site in Glenfarg, Perthshire on 5th April 2007. The TEG facility is one of the largest In-vessel composting sites in the UK. Ron Smith gave delegates an interesting and informative tour around the site.
The purpose built facility accepts 40,000 tonnes per annum of Animal by-products, green waste, wood waste and co-mingled food and garden waste for composting. Composting is carried out by 2 lines of 32 silo-cages which have a high-tech comprehensive temperature monitoring system to ensure compliance with the Animal by-products regulations. The waste is processed through shredding, (co-mingled) mixing/chopping units before being fed into the cages for composting. The material is in the cages for about 2-3 weeks prior to unloading and transferring for maturation. The material then undergoes maturation in a housed windrow system before being conditioned for use. The TEG facility also has a purpose built odour management system.
The group were shown around the site and were able to observe the various stages of the composting process and the management systems. This highly enjoyable visit was concluded with a question and answer session. Thanks to TEG Environmental Ltd, Ron Smith, Mike Orr and Fergus Healy for allowing the New Generation Group to visit the site.
