The Scottish New Generation Group visited Shore Recycling Ltd’s state of the art facility in Perth on 12th October 2006. Shore Recycling is one of the UK’s largest fridge recyclers and at their purpose built facility in Perth they recycle fridges, Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) and Cathode Ray Tubes (CRTs) from TVs and monitors. Hugh Booth and Tom Liddell gave delegates an interesting and informative tour around the site.
Fridges and WEEE are recycled using a MeWa QZ 2500, which uses chains to fragment materials and the fractions are then captured for recycling. The fridges undergo automatic material separation whereas a manual hand picking process is used for the WEEE to remove the hazardous components. All categories of WEEE are accepted including white goods, IT and telephony, small household equipment and larger commercial machinery. Fractions that are captured for recycling include: ferrous metals, non-ferrous metal, compressors, plastic, PUR foam briquettes, glass, ozone depleting substances, printed circuit boards. CRTs are recycled using Proventia recycling technology. The CRTs are cut using a laser to separate the panel and funnel glass before phosphor removal. The 2 different types of glass are segregated and cleaned prior to recycling.
Shore Recycling also offer a full transportation service where they will uplift the goods to be recycling and transport them back to their site in Perth or their Manchester site. The group were shown around the site and were able to observe the various functions in process from goods arriving to the collection of the recycled fractions. This highly enjoyable visit was concluded with a question and answer session. Thanks to Shore Recycling, Tom Liddell and Hugh Booth for allowing the New Generation Group to visit the site.
