MEMBER (MCIWM) - Chartered Waste Manager
- Minimum age of 25
- Has a relevant degree or post-graduate qualification and has a minimum of four years relevant continuous experience in wastes management including structured training.
OR
- Is a Corporate Member of a relevant Chartered Institution and has a minimum of two years relevant continuous experience in wastes management.
In all cases applicants will be required to satisfy a Professional Interview Panel. This will consist of senior members of the Institution and candidates will be asked to give a brief presentation on their area of work. Full details will be sent prior to interview.
LICENTIATE MEMBER (LCIWM)
Has a relevant degree or post graduate qualification, a minimum of one year's experience in the wastes management industry and has undergone a period of vocational training consisting of either:-
- satisfactory completion of a module of a post-graduate course on wastes management provided by a university, and approved for this purpose by CIWM; or
- satisfactory completion of 10 days of assessed training courses under CIWM/UCN scheme; or
- satisfactory completion of the HNC in Wastes Management; or
- satisfactory completion of the Open University's Diploma in Pollution Control; or
- such other programme of vocational training as shall be approved from time to time by CIWM's
Education and Training Committee.
A Licentiate Member is a Corporate Member of the Institution and is therefore entitled to full voting rights in matters of Institution business.
GRADUATE MEMBER (Grad MCIWM)
Any person who is concerned with wastes management and has a degree in a relevant subject but does not have the necessary continuous relevant experience required for Corporate Membership.
ASSOCIATE MEMBER (Assoc MCIWM)
Minimum age of 23
Has achieved passes in two A levels or holds a Higher National Certificate, or an equivalent qualification and has a minimum of five years relevant continuous experience in wastes management.
OR
Has achieved a full wastes management COTC at NVQ level 4 awarded by WAMITAB, City and Guilds or SQA.
TECHNICIAN MEMBER (Tech MCIWM)
Minimum age of 21
Holds a National Certificate, or an equivalent qualification and has a minimum of three years relevant continuous experience in wastes management, including structured training.
OR
Has achieved a full Wastes Management COTC at NVQ level 3 awarded by WAMITAB, City and Guilds or SQA.
STUDENT MEMBER
Minimum age of 16
A person who is undertaking a course of study and examination relevant to wastes management. This grade is available to both full-time and part-time students. Full-time students receive their first year's membership free of charge.
AFFILIATE MEMBER (Fast Track)
A person who is involved with wastes management, but as yet, is not eligible for any other grade of membership.
Mature Candidate Route
For the grades of Member, Associate Member and Technician Member it is possible for mature candidates to gain membership providing they meet the following requirements:
- Minimum age of 35
- Holds, or has held, a relevant position in the wastes management industry for a minimum of five years
- Satisfies the mature candidate review panel. This will require the submission of two reports. The first, of approximately 2,000 words, should cover the experience and training of the candidate. The second, of approximately 8,000 words, should detail a project or other substantial piece of work with which the candidate has been involved, and could be considered as equivalent to a major academic dissertation.

SENIOR GRADES OF MEMBERSHIP
FELLOW (FCIWM)
Any Member who has shown evidence of distinguished professional attainment in the sphere of wastes management, and has been a Corporate Member for at least seven years. Candidates for Fellowship need to be nominated by either three Fellows of the Institution or five Corporate Members. Fellows application forms can be obtained from the Membership Services Department
LIFE MEMBER
A Member or Fellow of the Institution who ceases to be actively engaged in wastes management may be transferred to the class of Life Member with the approval of the General Council. A candidate for election to Life Member shall normally have rendered exceptional service to the wastes management industry or the Institution.
RETIRED MEMBER
A Member of the Institution who ceases to be actively engaged in wastes management may transfer to the grade of Retired Member.
