The Batteries and Accumulators and Waste Batteries and Accumulators Directive (The Batteries Directive”) was published in the Official Journal of the European Union on 26 September 2006. The Directive seeks to improve the environmental performance of batteries and accumulators and of operators such as producers, distributors and end users, particularly those directly involved in the treatment and recycling of waste batteries and accumulators.
The UK and all other Member States must implement the legalisation contained within the Directive by 26 September 2008. The UK recently issued a consultation paper on options for implementation of the Batteries Directive.
In Northern Ireland the consultation period ends on 31 March 2008
