| Description | New Generation Group Site Visit to Glasgow City Council MRF
Venue: 425 Polmadie Rd, Glasgow Date: Wednesday 3 October 2007 Time: 10.30am
Glasgow City Council opened the largest Scottish local authority materials reclamation facility at Polmadie in 1999. Taking account of advances in recycling technology the facility was further developed throughout 2005. The plant which is built over three floors is designed to handle up to 25,000 tonnes of material per annum and can process, plastic bottles, food and drink cans and paper. Material being brought in is delivered to the top floor and tipped where it can be quality inspected. The material is then loaded into hoppers to be transferred to the middle floor. On the middle floor the materials are both manually and mechanically sorted with non recyclable material being removed. Paper is then separated from the other materials. A magnet recovers the steel cans and an eddy current removes the aluminium cans. The plastic bottles are then manually sorted into types. All the recovered material passes to the ground floor where it is either baled or loaded into containers to await transportation to one of our recycling partners. The facility also acts as one of Glasgow’s four waste transfer stations and has a civic amenity area where householders are encouraged to bring bulky items for recycling There will be information on how Glasgow encourage and collect recyclable materials in a challenging environment. PPE: protective footwear, Hi Viz, hard hats and ear defenders To book a place please e-mail myself fraser.gormal@sepa.org.uk I hope to see you there.
