Steve Lee confirmed as Director General of Resources & Waste UK

The Chartered Institution of Wastes Management (CIWM) and the Environmental Services Association (ESA) have today announced that Steve Lee, who will be stepping down as Chief Executive of CIWM at the end of October 2016, will continue in his role leading Resources & Waste UK (R&WUK), the joint policy and influencing body created in 2014.

Both organisations recognise that the political, economic and technical environment in which this industry operates, together with new pressures and responsibilities arising from the decision for the UK to leave the EU, make the need for a co-ordinated voice for the industry more important than ever. As Director General of R&WUK, Steve will be working closely with senior managers, Board Members and Trustees of both organisations, including the new CIWM CEO Dr Colin Church, to champion the needs and priorities of the sector and ensure its continued success.

Professor Jim Baird, President of CIWM and R&WUK Board member, said:
“Our industry faces challenges and opportunities – and responsibilities – that are greater than ever. Continued collaborative working between our two organisations is essential and we are delighted to confirm that Steve will continue to lead and support us in that work.”

Peter Gerstrom, Chairman of ESA and R&WUK Board Member, said:
“I am pleased that Steve has agreed to continue in his role at the head of R&WUK. It is essential that we develop the work that has already been achieved by ESA and CIWM through this body, and sustain the momentum gathered in championing the resource and waste management industry to government. With Steve remaining in the role, we can continue that work without interruption.”

Notes to Editors:

1. Resources and Waste UK (R&WUK) is a partnership between the Chartered Institution of Wastes Management (CIWM) and Environmental Services Association (ESA). Bringing together the professional institution and trade association at the heart of the sustainable resources and waste management industry in the UK, it was created in 2014 to form a single voice in the interests of championing the future of resource management. A jointly-owned company, R&WUK has a Board of six directors, three from each organisation.

2. Since its creation, R&WUK has commissioned and published reports including policy priorities for the incoming government in May 2015 and recommendations for secondary materials markets stabilisation. Its priorities for the immediate future include the identification of priorities for close working with UK governments, particularly on the development of circular economy policy at an EU and UK level and the necessary policy and legislative changes to accommodate the decision for the UK to leave the EU.
