LWARB Supports Orchids Renewable Fuel Facility
The London Waste and Recycling Board (LWARB) has awarded a 4 million loan to Orchid Environmental Limited, to develop a waste to renewable facility in the London Borough of Bexley.
With a capacity of handling and processing 160,000 tonnes of rubbish, the plant will treat waste with steam, before using a series of screening and separating technologies to remove recyclables, such as glass, metals and plastics. It will transform the rubbish into a range of secondary recovered fuels that can be used in renewable energy plants and by industrial heat users, preventing over 38,000 tonnes of carbon emissions from being pumped into the atmosphere each year. The waste collected from homes and businesses in the surrounding areas will provide its feedstock.
The plants site is located within an industrial area in the Belvedere ward of Bexley and its construction is nearing completion. The facility will be fully operational by early 2013 and will create 52 permanent green jobs.
The Mayor of London, Boris Johnson, said: 'This project is a fantastic example of the green economy in action, transforming London's rubbish into energy and creating new, permanent jobs.
James Cleverly, chair of LWARB, said: Every day we put potentially useful resources in our rubbish, which in many cases ends up in landfill. Orchids low carbon fuel production plant turns those resources into something useful. This not only reduces our reliance on fossil fuel sources, it will also create green jobs for the capital and divert up to 160,000 tonnes rubbish from entering the waste stream.
Commenting on the decision made by LWARB, Steve Whatmore, MD of Orchid Environmental Ltd, said: We welcome LWARB's fantastic demonstration of support for Orchids planned London facility and the recognition of the positive contribution this third Orchid merchant plant will make to London's carbon agenda.
Orchid Environmental Limited is the first waste to renewable fuel plant to be supported by the Board and is the fourth large-scale waste infrastructure project that LWARB has financed.

Recycle Week 2011 To Be Held In June
The Recycle Week campaign for the year 2011 is all set to kick off on 20 June, for a period of seven days, and will end on 26 June. The central theme of the campaign this year is Recycling Home and Away, which aims to support recycling at home and in public areas, like offices, shopping centres and parks. According to WRAPs Ideas Guide: Its all about how making even the smallest every day actions and changes will have a cumulative effect and ultimately help our local environment. From doing more of what we already do at home - such as remembering to recycle glass jars as well as bottles; or recycling things from upstairs as well as downstairs; to recycling while out and about.
The Recycle Week campaign has been a yearly event since 2004, and this year it is bringing together Recycle Now and Keep Britain Tidy in a partnership, through which 20-25 local councils in England have agreed to test a scheme, which will see the recycling of all the plastic bottles and metal cans collected in their area during the Big Tidy Up events.
The campaign offers many suggestions that specifically target local authorities, individuals, schools, businesses, retailers and brands on ways to get involved in the event and contribute to its overall success. The local authorities in particular are advised to use this as an opportunity to talk about their new recycling schemes and initiatives, boost the recycling rate of a particular material that has low capture rate or increase awareness and promotion of local recycle and reuse centres.
More information on the Recycle Now initiatives that can be adopted by various sections of the community during the Recycle Week can be found here:

Our investment in this project with ECO Plastics will start to address the recycling challenges in this country. British PET bottles will be recycled for re-use in packaging that will be sold from the shelves of British retailers.
The amounts of high rPET produced in GB will more than double, enabling CCE to meet our ambitious target of incorporating 25% rPET in all our plastic bottles by 2012. At the same time, we are working with our customers to encourage shoppers to recycle more as part of our wider sustainability efforts.
The joint venture deal with ECO Plastics is signed for 10 years, with CCE contributing 5 million towards equity investment to support construction of the new facility, and ECO Plastics raising an additional 10 million to complete funding for the project.
Furthermore, ECO Plastics current site in Lincolnshire is chosen as the location for building the facility, creating 15 jobs during the construction phase and up to 30 new jobs once the site is operational.
Jonathan Short, managing director, ECO Plastics, said: ECO Plastics has made huge strides in developing our business in recent years, to become the UKs leading plastic recycler. We are delighted to be partnering with a company of the calibre of Coca-Cola Enterprises and view this pioneering agreement as the next important step for our own business and the industry as a whole.

TPA Research Compiles Collection Statistics
Waste services rendered by councils are a direct assessment of their performance by the residents in terms of waste and environment management. And with increasing targets and waste collection regulations imposed by the EU Landfill Directive, the local councils until recently came under immense pressure to separate waste at the time of collection. Now this task has been passed on to the taxpayers. A recent research conducted by the Tax Payers Alliance throws light on the number of bins residents are required to collect and sort their rubbish into. If its a single bin of recyclable materials for some councils other councils require their residents to collect and segregate materials in to more than five different bins, a task often explained in a detailed leaflet on how they are required to separate waste. Further, some of these regulations are quite stringent and exacting with some local authorities imposing fines of up to 100 on those who fail to comply with the rules.
