The Certificate

The Chartered Institution of Wastes Management (CIWM), the professional body for waste experts, offers an accredited one day waste awareness course, aimed at providing employees with the knowledge and information sources to help your company minimise waste and stay within the law. Introduced in 2003, the Certificate is supported by Defra, Envirowise, The Environment Agency in England and Wales, SEPA, The EHS (NI) and the devolved UK regions.

What is covered?

• Learn about different types of waste
• Know your legal responsibilities
• How to conduct a waste audit to identify cost savings
• How to reduce, reuse and recycle waste
• Learn about disposal routes for remaining wastes
• Deal with waste safely
• Identify sources of help.

What is involved?

• A one day course presented by CIWM certified trainers
• A short multiple choice open book test
• Refreshments and lunch provided

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of the course, participants will be able to;

• Distinguish between different types and classifications of waste
• Explain the importance of legislation in promoting best practice in wastes management
• Explain the basic principles underpinning the Duty of Care and how their actions are important
• Describe the key stages in conducting a waste audit.

Who should attend?

• Those people whose work practices produce waste or those who need to greater understanding of waste principals
• Shop floor workers, managers - particularly facilities managers or those responsible for waste, office staff, cleaners, contractors etc. However, anybody who disposes of or deals with waste will benefit from this course and it is applicable to almost every type of organisation.

(NB. No prior knowledge to the subject is needed as this course is foundation level, similar to NVQ level 1).
