Description
FareShare is a tried and tested community-based scheme for diverting surplus edible food away from the waste stream. Manufacturers and retailers deliver surplus product to FareShare's warehouses where it is logged, sorted and stored and then delivered to local projects tackling food poverty - for example, hostels for homeless people. FareShare is a registered charity and most of its work is carried out by volunteers. There are now 12 FareShares all over England and Scotland and the project is about to expand into Wales. Cylch has set up FareShare Cymru and has contracted a project officer to develop a strategic plan for FareShare services in Wales.
FareShare South West in Bristol opened its doors in October 2007 and is one of the largest warehouses in the network, supporting more than 50 organisations, including hostels, day centres, lunch clubs and refugee centres, with regular deliveries of quality food.
