The London & Southern Counties Centre Annual Christmas Luncheon 2011 again exceeded all previous records with 963 guests booked for a magnificent three-course lunch followed by port/brandy and coffee. Our Chairman, Tony Hammond, was pleased to respond to the formal toast to the Chartered Institution, delivered by Defra Minister Lord Taylor of Holbeach, before Mick Miller, fresh from appearing in the Royal Variety Show, held the whole room entertained with a very funny series of anecdotes and jokes. The venue at Old Billingsgate was perfect for the occasion and has already been booked for this year's event.
A regular feature of this event is the charity collection. Successive Centre Chairmen have chosen Macmillan Cancer Support to be the beneficiary for at least the last ten years and every year the amount collected has increased. The Centre Council is pleased to announce that at the 2011 luncheon a record £11,016.25 was raised in cash from the tables. Most guests also completed gift aid forms to enhance the value of the collection to the charity. Judy Spence, Area Fundraising Manager for Macmillan has written:
"I want to thank you so much for inviting me to such a wonderful occasion and to thank everyone who gave so generously to Macmillan and what a huge amount to have raised! Macmillan has been helping people affected by cancer for the past 100 years, but we know that the needs of the 2 million people living with cancer today are not being fully met. This number will rise to 4 million by 2030 and cancer services will not be able to cope. We want to reach every single person who's diagnosed with cancer and be there for them at every stage of their cancer journey. The challenge ahead of us is huge, but I know that we can do it with the help of supporters like yourselves, so thank you once again for your generosity. We really couldn't reach the number of people we do without your help".
The London & Southern Counties Centre looks forward to seeing all our regular guests and newcomers at another record breaking event on Friday 7 December 2012.
