| Teaser Text | Very little thought was sometimes given to the term “zero waste”, but that’s changed with the latest zero waste plans to be unveiled. CIWM’s Chris Murphy revisits the zero waste debate
It is a little while since I have involved myself in the zero waste debate so, having only toyed with it previously, I thought it time to join in… particularly as it seems to be the topic on everyone’s lips.
This re-found interest has been sparked by the whole issue of zero waste, zero to landfill, the zero waste economy and, occasionally, zero thought or consideration. In reality this was rekindled in my consciousness following statements from the respective ministers in Westminster and Northern Ireland, and the release of zero waste strategic documents in Wales and Scotland (see page 54 for further examination).
Fortunately there is a deal of pragmatism in all the statements and documents, so hopefully we will not fall into the same trap we did with the sustainability discussion some 10 years ago. Back then everything was labelled “sustainable”, whether it was furniture, packaging or a transport policy, and whether it warranted the tag or not. |
