Teaser TextIn December 1950, Tom Bogie, an associate member of the Institute and inspector of cleansing at Dumfries, wrote about how he envisaged the industry in the year 2000, but what did the 1950 waste manager think our jobs would be like today? Gemma Howard found out Writing about the “future” Tom hoped that it “might act as a spur to further research, and so bring the hoped-for improvement a little nearer.” He addressed a range of issues, which we will report on here, with additional comment on his ideas and the realities of waste 50 years on. Concerning the storage of refuse, many of the same issues are still present today. Tom wrote: “The storage of refuse in many of the houses and shops in towns presents difficulties due to lack of storage space. A great number of houses have not suitable space where the ash bin and perhaps an individual kitchen waste container can be stored, even for a short period, without causing a nuisance. It is not likely that these tenements will be replaced for many years to come by houses where this storage is provided.
