The first waste management Private Finance Initiative (PFI) in Wales has attracted a prestigious public service award from Excellence Wales
Wrexham County Borough Council and its contractor, Waste Recycling Group (WRG) has each been awarded the Excellence Wales accolade for their partnership approach to creating the highly successful Wrexham Recycling Park.
The Wrexham project emerged as winner of the category "Our services - delivering high quality, citizen-centered services" from a field of 55 applicants and 26 finalists. The award is made by the Excellence Wales scheme and is run by the Welsh Local Government Association (WLGA), with funding from the Welsh Assembly Government.
The achievement was marked by a celebration involving senior representatives of the Council and WRG at the recycling park.
Paul Taylor, Chief Executive of WRG, said: "This has been a true partnership based on a shared commitment to success and service. I'm delighted that WRG has been able to contribute to the Council's achievements on behalf of its residents and we look forward to building on this success in the months and years ahead."
The occasion proved a double celebration as Wrexham Council accepted the Carbon Trust Standard to mark the measures taken by Wrexham Council to measure, manage and reduce its carbon emissions by almost 5 percent year on year.
Aims And Achievements
Reducing carbon emissions and energy use is one of the Council's three priorities and it aims to significantly reduce its carbon footprint by 50 percent by 2015/16 and encourages residents, businesses and organisations to do the same.
As well as providing environmental benefits, saving energy also helps the Council to save money and limit the impact that rising energy costs could have on the services that it provides.
Harry Morrison, General Manager, Carbon Trust Standard, said: "Being certified with the Carbon Trust Standard is proof that an organisation has taken genuine action to reduce its impact on climate change. We congratulate Wrexham County Borough Council on this achievement."
A number of projects have already been completed and more are underway, including fitting energy efficient street lights in residential areas, replacing old inefficient boilers in council buildings with more energy efficient models, installing the latest energy efficient equipment to heat and power our leisure centers, improving the energy efficiency of its primary and secondary schools and investigating how it can produce and use renewable energy.
The council has also launched a new campaign to encourage residents and business in Wrexham to take small but effective steps to reduce carbon emissions and energy to fight climate change together. Information is available at www.peoplepowerwrexham.org
