Coal giant's shareholders yesterday (11 July) approved plans to establish a joint venture with Peel Environmental that could see the development of waste-to-energy facilities built on 11 UK Coal sites
Jonson Cox, executive chairman, UK Coal, the country's largest mining company, said: "This proposed waste to energy joint venture with the Peel Group will enable UK Coal to benefit from, and mitigate the risk and cost of, the development of eleven sites in the Company's property portfolio," he said.
"These sites have not been identified as suitable for alternative development uses. This represents part of UK Coal's focus on simultaneously unlocking and developing the maximum value from its property portfolio."
Peel Environmental yesterday revealed the plans were at a "very early stage" and there were "no firm plans or decisions" but said the joint-venture will focus on waste-to-energy projects utilising commercial and industrial (C&I) waste.
The 11 UK Coal sites named are:
• Asfordby Mine, Leicestershire
• Bilsthorpe Colliery, Nottinghamshire
• Cutacre Industrial site, Bolton
• Gedling Colliery, Nottinghamshire
• Houghton Main Mine site, Yorkshire
• Kellingley Colliery, Yorkshire
• Meriden Quarry, West Midlands
• Tetron Point, Derbyshire
• Wardley Coal Disposal point, South Tyneside
• Waverley, Yorkshire
• North Selby, Yorkshire
