L'Oreal and Terracycle have announced a partnership to recycle personal care and beauty product packaging through the Personal Care and Beauty Brigade
L'Oreal's personal care brand Garnier is taking steps to reduce the amount of landfill waste generated by its products by partnering with TerraCycle.
Personal care and beauty products account for one-third of all landfill waste.
Terracycle will collect the waste and process it to become eco-friendly playgrounds around the US.
Garnier aims to divert a significant portion of its product packaging waste through the sponsorship of worldwide "Personal Care and Beauty Brigades"-individuals or groups who sign up to participate. For every piece of waste collected, Garnier will contribute two cents to the charity of the individual or group's choice.
This year Garnier is beginning a two-year roll-out of new, greener products, including renewable, bio-derived plastics; cardboard packaging sourced from sustainably managed forests; and the use of more naturally-derived ingredients.
Garnier debuted a biodegradable shampoo and conditioner called Pure Clean in March to help solidify and celebrate the new sustainability partnership.
"Through the ambitious effort of having the Personal Care and Beauty Brigade, we look forward to making an impact on the amount of beauty and cosmetic packaging that is thrown away each year," says Tom Szaky, TerraCycle CEO.
