Research Shows Wales Welcomes Sustainability

Over half the adult population (56 percent) in Wales knows something about sustainable development and just over two thirds (68 percent) think they could do more to live sustainably, new research has found

The Welsh Government's Sustainability survey 2011 was launched by environment and sustainable development minister John Griffiths, to uncover Welsh views and attitudes to sustainability and climate change.

Its results will help inform future work, including the introduction of the Sustainable Development Bill.

Launching the research findings the Minister said: "Sustainability to me is about making choices that not only benefit Wales, but also ensure that future generations have the same opportunities and resources that we have had.

"Travelling around Wales I see examples of how organisations are realising that this is the way to fit ourselves to deal with the challenges of the future. "

A cross section of people, representing the population of Wales, was interviewed face-to-face during the summer. Seven out of ten interviewees (72 percent) agreed that sustainable development should play a central part to decision making in Wales. Only 4 percent disagreed.

Other key findings of the survey include:

The vast majority of people (91 percent) agree that caring for the environment is an important part of living in Wales.

Most homeowners say they engage in energy saving behaviours around the home, though there is potential to make homes more energy efficient. Nine out of ten homeowners (89 percent) report having double-glazing and almost as many say they have loft insulation (83 percent). However, installation of other measures such as cavity wall insulation (46 percent), solid wall insulation (12 percent) and renewable heat resources (2 percent) are lower.

Recycling is the accepted norm across Wales. Over half the population (54 percent) say they recycle all they can, with a further third (34 percent) recycling a lot. Only 2 percent do not recycle at all.
